Overview
Tungnath and Chandrashila are the “goldilocks” of Himalayan treks: accessible enough for beginners, yet breathtaking enough to satisfy seasoned mountaineers. Located in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand, this trek combines spiritual ancient history with 360-degree alpine views.
Quick Trek Profile
- Base Camp: Chopta (often called the “Mini Switzerland of India”).
- Maximum Altitude: 4,000 meters (13,123 feet) at Chandrashila Summit.
- Distance: Approximately 5 km one way (3.5 km to Tungnath +1.5 km to the summit).
- Difficulty: Easy to Moderate (well-paved stone path to the temple; steeper dirt trail to the summit).
Highlights
- The World’s Highest Shiva Temple: Tungnath is the highest of the Panch Kedar temples, believed to be over 1,000 years old. Legend says it was built by the Pandavas to appease Lord Shiva.
- The "Moon Rock" Summit: Chandrashila literally translates to "Moon Rock." It is said that Lord Rama meditated here after defeating Ravana.
- 360-Degree Himalayan Panorama: From the summit, you get a front-row seat to some of India’s highest peaks, including Nanda Devi, Trishul, Chaukhamba, and Kedar Dome.
- Wildlife & Flora: The trail winds through the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary. In spring (April–May), the forests are ablaze with red and pink Rhododendrons. Keep an eye out for the colorful Himalayan Monal (the state bird of Uttarakhand).
- Deoria Tal Extension: Most trekkers add a visit to this pristine lake nearby, famous for its "mirror reflection" of the Chaukhamba peaks in its crystal-clear water.
