CHAKRATA – A Hidden Gem

Indian Citizens: No special permit is required for Indian nationals to visit or stay in Chakrata.

Foreign Nationals: Since Chakrata is a restricted military cantonment, foreign tourists (including those from OCI/PIO categories) are generally prohibited from entering the main town and its surroundings. They may visit nearby areas like Mussoorie or Kalsi instead.

Yes, the roads are generally well-maintained, but they are narrow and involve steep hairpin bends. If you aren’t experienced with mountain driving, it’s safer to hire a local driver from Dehradun.

Chakrata is considered very safe. The locals are helpful, and because it is a military area, there is a disciplined environment. However, avoid trekking alone in secluded spots like Budher Caves or Tiger Falls after sunset.

ATMs: Limited. There are a few in the main market, but they often run out of cash. Carry sufficient cash from Dehradun.

Connectivity: Jio and Airtel work reasonably well in the main town, but expect signal drops at Tiger Falls, Deoban, or Moila Top.

Absolutely. It is much quieter than Shimla or Mussoorie. Most “activities” involve short, easy treks and picnics, which are great for kids and seniors.
