Trip Overview
The McLeodganj-Triund circuit is widely considered the best introductory trek in India. Located in the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh, the journey begins in the cultural hub of McLeodganj, the residence of His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
The trek itself is a scenic 9 km climb that transitions from dense forests of oak, deodar, and blooming rhododendrons to the massive alpine meadow of Triund. Standing at an altitude of approximately 2,850 meters, you are treated to a dramatic “front-row seat” of the snow-capped Dhauladhar range on one side and the sprawling Kangra Valley on the other.
Trip Highlights
- Spiritual Immersion: Visit the Namgyal Monastery and the Dalai Lama Temple Complex to witness the serene lifestyle of Tibetan monks.
- The "22 Curves": Conquer the final stretch of the trek, a series of switchbacks that test your stamina before rewarding you with world-class views.
- Sunset Above the Clouds: Experience a legendary sunset at Triund Top, where the peaks turn golden and the valley below lights up like a sea of stars.
- Starlit Camping: Spend a night in high-quality alpine tents under a clear, unpolluted Himalayan sky.
- Cafe Hopping: Relax at the famous Shiva Cafe near Bhagsu Waterfall or grab a tea at Magic View, the oldest chai shop on the trekking route.
- Flora & Fauna: Traverse through enchanting forests that are home to various Himalayan songbirds and vibrant wildflowers.
